God's (Ten) Words to His People Week 3
Q.What is God’s will for us in the third commandment?
A.That we neither blaspheme nor misuse the name of God by cursing, perjury, or unnecessary oaths, nor share in such horrible sins by being silent bystanders. In summary, we must use the holy name of God only with reverence and awe, so that we may properly confess him, call upon him, and praise him in everything we do and say.

Lost at Sea: An Introduction
There are many aspects of Jonah that seem odd to us. Or if you have ever truly though about it these things may seem odd. Let me give you some of the highlights of this magnificent little book so that we can all be on the same page. Jonah is about:
A disobedient prophet who happens also to be a Prejudiced and Nationalistic (dare we say racist) man who is called to preach to
Murderous and merciless savages, but by savages we clearly mean urbane and civilised people.
While acting disobediently our Jonah is swallowed by a sea monster of some sort who vomits him out…
And at the end of it all Jonah preaches a withholding Gospel which seems to bring salvation to “those” people and to their cows too.
Maybe none of that phases you except for maybe the fish. Now we all know that when a man catches a fish and wants to talk about how large it was we should probably not believe them unless it is sitting on a plate in front of us. However when a fish catches a man we listen a little more closely. Here is the Western Cape that fish is typically a shark and we want to know which beach they were swimming at. Which town? How far out did they go? How can I avoid that?
Well in a similar way our text will say that God appointed the fish to swallow and carry Jonah. We could say that God appointed a fish to make us ask the questions: Where was Jonah going? What was he running away from? How can I avoid that kind of fate? How can I avoid my heart being hardened to the word of God?

Matthew 6:1–15
[1] “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
[2] “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [3] But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
[5] “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [6] But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
[7] “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. [8] Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. [9] Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. [10] Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread, [12] and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
[14] For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, [15] but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
