Confessional Approach to Skin Colour and the Cross

Acts 29

Article 5 (Lausanne Covenant)

CHRISTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We affirm that God is both the Creator and the Judge of all men. We therefore should share his concern for justice and reconciliation throughout human society and for the liberation of men and women from every kind of oppression. Because men and women are made in the image of God, every person, regardless of race, religion, colour, culture, class, sex or age, has an intrinsic dignity because of which he or she should be respected and served, not exploited. Here too we express penitence both for our neglect and for having sometimes regarded evangelism and social concern as mutually exclusive. Although reconciliation with other people is not reconciliation with God, nor is social action evangelism, nor is political liberation salvation, nevertheless we affirm that evangelism and socio-political involvement are both part of our Christian duty. For both are necessary expressions of our doctrines of God and Man, our love for our neighbour and our obedience to Jesus Christ. The message of salvation implies also a message of judgment upon every form of alienation, oppression and discrimination, and we should not be afraid to denounce evil and injustice wherever they exist. When people receive Christ they are born again into his kingdom and must seek not only to exhibit but also to spread its righteousness in the midst of an unrighteous world. The salvation we claim should be transforming us in the totality of our personal and social responsibilities. Faith without works is dead.

EVANGELICAL BAPTIST CATHOLICITY: A MANIFESTO

Article 6

We affirm that all people, regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, are created in God's image and, if they have repented and believed in Christ, are brothers and sisters together in the one body of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Because of this shared imago dei and because of Christ's saving work among all nations, peoples, and tongues, we believe that one major task of Baptist catholicity is to promote racial unity, especially within the body of Christ.

Why Black Lives Matter: A Theological and Confessional Account

This is a very helpful and declarative document that acknowledges a true sentiment that the world at large gets very wrong.

In our South African context it would be helpful to see this kind of concept expounded upon alongside of Biko’s “Black Consciousness” and his definition of a “Black Life“.

VI. Black lives matter because the social and political structures that govern black life belong to God and matter to God.[6]

VII. Black lives matter in the church because God’s people are called to care about the social and economic status of human persons, especially those united to Him.[7]

VIII. Black lives matter in the church because all people who have received the sacrament of holy baptism belong to God and his church. [8]

IX. Blacks lives matter in the church because the spiritual nourishment that comes through the Lord’s Supper is for black lives united to Christ.[9]

X. Black lives matter in the church because, for those united to Christ, the Resurrection of the dead and eternal life with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit awaits them.[10]
