Isaiah Part Four: Good Friday

Isaiah Part Four: Good Friday

So it was on this day just under 2000 years ago (1985) that these prophecies from 2700 years ago came true. There was one man, the God-Man Jesus, came and suffered for all of us, for all of our sin and yet not just for all of our sin. He suffered and in his suffering defeated Satan, his servants, Death, and Hell, which no longer holds power over any of God’s People.

And just last night, and perhaps into today, that that Suffering Servant shared a meal with his Disciples, his closest friends, and gave an ancient meal a brand new meaning for a brand new people.

Grab your go-bags, a bakkie load of water and canned goods, and head to the mountains because the end of all things near...or maybe not.

We are however waiting on only one thing...the return of Jesus and the completion of God's plan of redemption that has remained unchanged throughout history.

1 Peter 4:1–6

[1] Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, [2] so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. [3] For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. [4] With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of debauchery, and they malign you; [5] but they will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. [6] For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

1 Peter 3:18–22

[18] For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, [19] in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, [20] because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. [21] Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, [22] who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

1 Peter 3:8–12

[8] Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. [9] Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. [10] For

    “Whoever desires to love life
        and see good days,
    let him keep his tongue from evil
        and his lips from speaking deceit;
    [11] let him turn away from evil and do good;
        let him seek peace and pursue it.
    [12] For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
        and his ears are open to their prayer.
    But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Truth is Coming

This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. [1 Timothy 2:3-7]

Here Paul is talking about the truth as a couple of different things but they all revolve around Jesus, his person and his work. The “knowledge of the truth” seems to be related to the Gospel. Specifically speaking about Jesus’ death on the cross for us and his resurrection. If we zoom out a little though I would like to expand this so we get a full sense of what that really means. It also entails Jesus’ forever existence, his incarnation and birth, his perfect life, his perfectly atoning death, his resurrection, his return to his father, and the promise of his coming again.

That is a lot to take in and yet it is a package deal. This package of beliefs is exactly what Paul is talking about at the end of the verse. He is reminding us of his task to reach non-Jews with that Good News and everything that comes along with it.

We have to love the fact too that Paul makes sure to let us know that he is a truth-teller in this situation. He is making sure we know he is speaking God’s truth and that there is an urgency to share it.

We anticipate Christmas morning to fully celebrate Jesus’ birth and our redemption. Do you anticipate Jesus coming again? You should, even more than you anticipate Christmas.

1 Peter: Week 9

1 Peter: Week 9

...if you are showing Jesus to the world around you through hard work and enduring through hardship, you are doing good and this is a special grace in your life. That is to say that if you are going through this suffering the way God wants you to…you are “more fully glorifying” God than you would be without suffering. You are experiencing something of the life of Christ that makes you more complete than those who suffer nothing.

1 Peter 2:13-17

[13] Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, [14] or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. [15] For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. [16] Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. [17] Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. (ESV)

1 Peter: Week 7

1 Peter 2:9-12

[9] But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. [10] Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

[11] Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. [12] Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. (ESV)
